School Direct course

School Direct is a school-based route for graduates wanting to train as teachers.

It allows for more hands-on experience in the classroom, as well as professional and academic training.

There are many reasons for choosing a School Direct course with us:

  • Our School Direct course provides you with a great combination of both academic teaching and practical experience in the classroom.
  • You are placed in two schools - your main, host school, plus a contrasting school for a shorter placement.
  • You get the benefit of being a student in a university, with access to their services - as well as being part of a real school, learning from other staff and getting hands-on experience in the classroom.
  • We also run our own programme of Professional Learning courses, covering everything from lesson design and behaviour management, to time management and communication with parents.
  • We provide support to help you get your first job. Our trainees have an excellent track record of getting jobs within one month of finishing our training course.
  • But we stay in touch after that too, supporting you throughout your career. We provide training for all stages of teaching - from subject specialism through to middle and senior leadership.

Our School Direct programme is rooted in Outstanding education

The founding school of our alliance is Silverdale, a secondary comprehensive school in the south of Sheffield:
  • Rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted.
  • Sunday Times ‘Top State School in the North’ 2018.
  • Highest Progress 8 score in South Yorkshire 2018.
  • Highest  A-level results in Sheffield 2017.
  • Highest A-level progress results in Sheffield 2018.
Our lead primary school is Malin Bridge school in Sheffield.
  • Rated ‘Outstanding’ by Ofsted.

Feel part of the school team

You won't just learn the theory of teaching, you'll learn from practising teachers who will support you at every stage.

From life in the staff room, to communicating with parents, you'll experience the reality of life in a school. You'll also have your own school-based mentor, who will be there to answer any questions and ensure you experience the full range of activities in a school. Most importantly, you'll get to observe outstanding teaching in action.

You'll still get the benefit of university teaching

Our teacher training courses are delivered in partnership with the two Sheffield universities.

At either Sheffield Hallam University or the University of Sheffield, you will have the support of an academic tutor. As well as lectures and seminars on the theory of teaching, you will also have access to all the universities facilities and support services.
