The course is an excellent mix of both hands-on training in the classroom (with placements in two contrasting schools) and academic teaching at university.
We offer two placements in primary schools from across our excellent and varied network across South Yorkshire and North Derbyshire.
You will have your own mentor in school, who supports you throughout the course. You also have a specialised programme of training put in place by a senior mentor, to complement academic input but also taking advantage of the expertise and strengths of the staff and schools in the alliance.
There will be a shorter placement in the middle of the year where you will be able to gain experience in a contrasting setting according to identified needs.
During the placements, there will be further training provided by the schools and the alliance. As a group of schools we have developed a specialised programme of training which is designed to complement academic input but also to utilise the expertise and strengths of the staff and schools in the alliance.
Your training has been developed in close collaboration with Sheffield Hallam University, whose Institute of Education was recently rated as 'Outstanding' by Ofsted for its primary teacher training.
For most of the year, on 'return Friday' you will attend Sheffield Hallam University with fellow trainees. In university you will be tutored by specialist academic staff and have the opportunity to explore your own subject knowledge away from the classroom and to reflect on classroom experience with professionals.
As part of your training you can choose to take a specialism in SEND (Special Educational Needs and Disabilities). This allows you to learn more about how to support children who may have a disability or mild to moderate learning difficulties.Â
This training is useful for teaching in early years, primary and special schools, providing you with a wider understanding of the different needs of your students.
